Someone Who Doesn’t Know Opera Does Opera: Hansel and Gretel at the Seattle Opera

A little less than a year ago, I attended the first and only opera of my life at the capable and fantastically talented hands of the Seattle Opera cast. And this upcoming Saturday, I’m going again.

The show I’ll be seeing this time is the Seattle Opera’s production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, a modern operatic interpretation of the famous Brothers Grimm tale, which has seen some positive reviews so far. The Seattle Times called the production “marvelously witty,” and the Daily Telegraph gave the show five stars.

This interpretation of the classic story is meant to offer a strange and unique take on modern consumerism. Much of the set seems to be based around a giant wall made from grocery items and packaged foods. I’m excited to see how the Seattle Opera manages to pull off applying this type of moral to the story that has been with us for centuries.

Based on my last experience with the Seattle Opera, I believe I am in for an incredible performance this Saturday at McCaw Hall at Seattle Center. I’m expecting the music to be absolutely beautiful, the operatic singing to be utterly powerful and foreign to my ears (which are a little too used to indie rock vocals and Beastie Boys), and the acting to be jovial and fantastic. I highly encourage anyone mildly interested in this genre of performance to check it out.

There are still performances up until October 30, and you can get tickets here. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m., and matinees are at 2:00 p.m. at McCaw Hall at Seattle Center.
