Showbox SODO has to be one of the nicest venues in Seattle. It’s pretty big but not too big to the point where you feel like you’re in an arena. The twinkle lights hanging from the rafters give the place an intimate feeling. By the time I got inside for BØRNS, it was packed with adults and tweens alike. Prince played between sets and we basked in the electro-pop glow of three extremely talented artists.

The show promptly started at 8:00 PM with Mikky Ekko, American singer-songwriter getting the night started. He played several songs from his EPs, Reds and Blues. The crowd enjoyed his set, but I heard several people mumbled, “who is this guy?” That question was answered when Ekko ushered in the first notes of “Stay” which the crowd recognized instantly. He wrote the song that Rihanna used as a single off her Unapologetic album and is featured on the track alongside the superstar. His voice rang clear and true as the audience joined in on the chorus. After Mikky’s pop-driven set, we were left buzzing in anticipation for BØRNS.

Between Mikky Ekko and BØRNS, Canadian singer-songwriter, Charlotte Cardin made the crowd get sad. She stood behind her keyboard and belted out songs about past lovers in a sultry tone. The group standing next to me said they thought she sounded like Adele, but my friend and I agree that she was more of an Amy Winehouse. Along with her velvety voice, Charlotte was undeniably stunning and the group of dudes next to me couldn’t resist commenting on her appearance over and over. Men can be gross but at least they were there supporting an artist on the rise!

Finally, BØRNS emerged. The slender-longhaired man jumped right into “God Save Our Young Blood” and took off from there. The only thing missing from the show was Lana Del Rey. He played other bangers like “Faded Heart” and “Supernatural”, then danced around to the instrumental parts of his songs. The crowd ate it all up and danced right along with him in the sweltering venue. After about six songs, he thanked the crowd and walked off stage. Clearly, this could not be the end of the show, so the crowd hollered for an encore and the performed obliged. His encore was longer than his actual set, but he played his best stuff during this period. The sequence of, “10,000 Emerald Pools”, “American Money”, and “Past Lives” all led up to the show’s climax where BØRNS sang, “Electric Love”.

Overall, it was an electric night for all the die-hard BØRNS fans in the room and I was lucky to be part of it. If you’re interested in keeping up with Mikky Ekko and Charlotte Cardin, their music can be found on Spotify!

Bonus concert! Charlotte Cardin will be returning to Seattle on April 28th at the Crocodile. Tickets to that event are available here.
