I feel like I have been waiting FOREVER for this moment—the moment when Seattle band, the Naked Giants release their debut full-length album. SLUFF has been a long time in the making and can trace its origins back to the formation of the band. Preschool buddies Henry LaVallee (drummer) and Grant Mullen (guitarist/vocalist) lost touch after starting kindergarten, but eventually reconnected at a drum clinic in high school and started jamming together. They picked up bassist/vocalist, Gianni Aiello, after seeing him play with another band after the Naked Giants (which at the time was just a twosome) at the Crocodile. From there, they played numerous house shows, 2015’s Sound Off! competition, Bumbershoot 2016, and even Capitol Hill Block Party 2017.

The three men responsible for the booty-shaking, good-time inspiring sound of the Naked Giants have been influenced by the likes of the Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, Ty Segall, and even Pink Floyd. From a combination of those artists, each member’s own life experiences, and their drive to succeed at being rock stars, comes a band that will knock you off your feet. The trio is impossible not to fall in love with as they each bring their own personality to the stage. Henry LaVallee isn’t the kind of drummer who just sits behind his kit, he gets up and walks around stage just to shake things up. The three artists act like fools who love playing music whether they’re in a bar in the middle of nowhere or in front of their closest friends in any of Seattle’s historic venues, which helps make them feel so authentic and fun to watch.

To go to a Naked Giants show is to take part in an explosion of energy, fun, and sweet guitar riffs. The boys have an alluring stage presence that draws their audience in and forces them to have as much fun as the band. With a signature upbeat and fast paced sound, the band delivers classics like “TV” and “Easy Eating” along with the slow and soulful, “Slow Dance II” (which I have been waiting so long to add to my Spotify playlist of love songs). SLUFF will be a chance for longtime fans who haven’t seen band play in a while to hear new tracks “Dat Boi” and “Shredded Again”. Personally, I’m stoked to hear some new material partnered with the familiar moshability of a typical Naked Giants show.

The Naked Giants will be playing Chop Suey on Thursday, March 29th. They will be joined by Seattle costume-rockers, The Fabulous Downey Brothers, who sound like the B-52s with a bit of a punk edge—plus, their D.I.Y. costumes serve as a colorful assault that make them beyond memorable. Seattle’s own The Black Tones, led by twins Eva and Cedric, will round out the bill. Self-described on their Bandcamp page as “a goody bag of BLUES, PUNK, and BLACK POWER,” The Black Tones are one of the most exciting acts coming out of Seattle right now.
