One of the best things about the Seattle music scene is the variety of artists it attracts. Coming to Neumos on Saturday, May 5th, is Colter Wall, one of country music’s most exciting young voices.

Colter Wall is a prairie-born songwriter from Saskatchewan, Canada. Wall’s inaugural EP, Imaginary Appalachia, continues to keep him a non-stop, buzzed-about young artist and has evoked visceral reactions from industry veterans, his musical heroes and peers, as well as a loyal and quickly-growing grassroots fan base. His signature baritone vocal is paired with sparse, beautiful old-soul songwriting inspired by artists like Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, Emmylou Harris, and Waylon Jennings.

Here are a few things you might be interested to know about him:

  1. 1. He loves vinyl. Wall once said that listening to vinyl records is his favorite way to consume music. He loves a good story—and telling a good story—and he thinks listening to an entire album is the same as reading a good book.
  2. 2. He started writing songs in high school. Wall decided to start trying to write and sing songs when he was around 16-years-old. Prior to songwriting, Wall was focused on jamming on the guitar since age 13, mimicking artists such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
  3. 3. Faith has shaped who he is. Though he says he’s found his own way when it comes to his personal faith. “It’s certainly affected me and my writing in a lot of ways,” he once said. “Being raised Christian and going to church in a small town, that has a lot to do with my makeup as a human being, and has a lot to do with my songwriting, too.”
