BASICally the Jam to Your Pregame: A Review of the Charli XCX’s New Record Sucker

charli

I will preface this review by saying that I am not an expert on this type of music and normally would not buy an album in this genre, however, I have the album, I didn’t hate it, so I think it deserves a review.

For anyone sincerely missing the “punk” sass and confidence that Avril Lavigne used to give you as a 13-year-old, Charli XCX is here to save you. Charli XCX made a name for herself by being the featured hook on Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy.” With Iggy hitting it big it was easy for Charli’s name to get out to the world. Charli is now releasing her second commercial album SUCKER.

The album has the attitude of Avril Lavigne, a sort of indie British vibe that I can really only compare to Lorde, and the looks of a hot mess, so this album is a release that will certainly be taken very well by current listeners. Being very well organized, the record is perfect for a dance party or an exciting drive to school in the morning. I could not listen to this album without feeling pretty hyped for my day.

The album’s catchiest song is actually a song that came out about 6 months ago on the Fault in Our Stars soundtrack called “Boom Clap.” The song is a bit darker and less bubble gummy than the other song, but also has a hook that will regrettably never leave my head.

My second favorite song on the album was the last song on the track called “Need Ur Luv,” it has a really fun feel to it, and I want to compare it to something that I know but I can’t quite put my finger on what it reminds me of. The song has a fun hook that would be perfect for a Hip Hop sample and otherwise the song is very simple. Other than these two songs with exception Doing It, the rest of the album all sounds pretty much the same. Fortunately the sound that the songs have is well produced, fun, and very upbeat. Here are the songs I have suggested:

This album is not my favorite album of the year or even close to my favorite. I can say, however, that though I would normally not choose to listen to this sort of music I will probably go back and listen to “Boom Clap” and “Need Ur Luv” quite a bit and when I am feeling BASIC and want to get hyphy I’ll be excited to have this album to play the whole way through. The album is out now as of December 15th and will most likely be very well received by the public, so if you listen to it, let us know what you think of it in the comments below.
