Music recommendations coming straight from the stars.

Mom always said, “April showers bring May flowers.” If that’s true, May ought to be a beautiful, bountiful month. Look at the sky more often! May 6thand 7th, we are graced by the presence of the Eta Aquarids, a meteor shower capable of producing almost 60 meteors per hour, at their peak. Radiating from the Aquarius constellation, these days have the potential to bring new emotions to the forefront of your mind. On the 15th, it will be a new moon! Unfortunately, the moon falls on the same side of the earth as the sun, so the moon is not visible, but with less moonlight, stars are on display. By the full moon on May 29th, the planet has traveled to the opposite side. Known as the Flower Moon, on this day give thanks to the phase of rebirth, in whatever way (I’m not telling you to eat flowers or something, maybe just call your mom or water your roommate’s dying house plant).

As always, the stars have no real bearing on the workings of our lives, unless you think they do.

CAPRICORN

(December 22—January 19): Patience. You need it. Creating problems where they don’t exist? You’re probably doing it. Allow someone in your life to teach you a new skill, practical or emotional. Suggestions include: dignity, humility.

“CRIMSON & CLOVER” by Tommy and The Shondells

AQUARIUS

(January 20—February 18): So you’re afraid of emotionality, what else is new? May is not the month to hold back. Cry if you feel like it, yell if your lungs demand you to do so. Affectation and pretentious (possibly performative) aloof characteristics only limit your relationships—most importantly, your relationship with yourself. You have permission to be soft. Purity is rare.

Chinese Football’s self-titled album will create happy tears

PISCES

(February 19—March 20): Stay in the water! Swimming in circles might be comfortable, but there’s more to you than safety. Avoid being taken advantage of by making alone time more satisfying. This time is precious; doubting your worth is silly. Tackle your woes creatively. Write a song, paint a picture, doodle haphazardly in your notes, whatever keeps you moving.

Hang out with yourself while listening to Online by Triathalon

ARIES

(March 21—April 19): Wear a lot of color this month. Becoming comfortable with small risks will prepare you to take a big step, or make a big speculation. Maybe the color red will sharpen your focus, or strengthen your internal motivation. You’ll need to think through decisions carefully, especially matters of money. Manage your impulses and quiet your restless spirit.

TAURUS

(April 20—May 20):  You may be feeling lucky. Don’t test it. Be wary of naive confidence; you may fool yourself into thinking things are better than they actually are. May is a time to utilize reason and logic. Many new faces may cross your path, but only those who offer awareness of your limitations will stick around.

GEMINI

(May 21—June 20): As the beginning of Gemini season begins, power struggles ensue. Dominating your partner? Being an overbearing roommate? Canceling plans last minute, then ghosting a friend who forgets your tentative dinner date? People other than you can be right! Stop resisting. Sync up with others, avoid being too pushy, and flex your adaptability. Just wait and see.

Reminder: Good things come in two’s (and three’s), like Hoops’ compilation album, Tapes #1-3

CANCER

(June 21-July 22): Buy yourself flowers (this way you won’t fall in love with the first person to pick you a daffodil from the sidewalk). May is going to push you. Push back. What have you learned about yourself in the past months? What wisdom have you gained, or progress have you made? Congratulate yourself. Accept difficulty and challenges rather than finding them overwhelming. There is only more progress to be made.

Feeling down? Fight back with IYEZ’ self titled IYEZ

LEO

(July 23-August 22): Love is all around you, but where is it coming from? Are you the source? Let love (and those who give it) come to you. Perhaps this will fix your dissatisfaction. Leading the pack satisfies cravings for control; if your plan goes accordingly, the future should be in your favor. Careful not to burn bridges on the way. Remember: to receive you must give.

Music for lovers: Between the Sheets by The Isley Brothers

VIRGO

(August 23-September 22): You need a change of scenery. Perspective, perspective, perspective. Keep in mind, to do and continue to do so, a Virgo must first understand. Learning might mean observation before any attempt is made. Unfortunately, you can’t accomplish everything on the to-do list in May. Instead, have a discussion, experience more, expand your background knowledge in anticipation.

You need music which inspires movement, like Abya Yalaby Combo Chimbita

LIBRA

(September 23-October 22):Finally! Realizations long awaited should appear, and clearly. Before you sit down to ponder this new information, clean the table. Direct energies toward growth, rather than traveling backwards. Obsessing is all-too common for Libras. Yes, imagination is a strength, but if you build up scenarios in your head, loved ones will let you down. Keep your mind clear, and there is no need to build pedestals, or put people on them, in order to see.

Just be cool, like That’s How Baby Learns by Charles

SCORPIO

(October 23-November 21): Embrace practicality. Stay in touch with your inner child, they miss the sun! Fear of judgement has been holding you back; set yourself free this month. Do what works for you, regardless of what you may think others are thinking (hint: no one cares about that thing you think everyone is secretly ridiculing you for).

Dance a lot, and do it to American Dream by LCD Soundsystem

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22-December 21): Maybe it isn’t obvious yet, but you’ve set yourself up to succeed. Now more than ever, efficiency is key. On the contrary, some things are worth fighting for! Giving up on a frustrating job, or letting an argument get the best of you is not in your favor. Concentrate on details in tasks while being wary of nit-picking the people around you.
