Living in the heart of Seattle, there is always a way to find live music. Capitol Hill is one of the liveliest neighborhoods of the city, with dozens of venues for music lovers in the area, Neumos being one of them.

On Friday, February 18, I went to Neumos and saw Inner Wave, an indie, modern-psychedelic group from Los Angeles, California. The concert started at 9 p.m. and included an opener, EKKSTACY, who I, unfortunately, did not get to see.

Inner Wave’s set started at 10 p.m., and the immediate energy from the crowd made the show an enjoyable experience from the start. They started by performing a few songs from their new album, which had everyone in the crowd dancing. With a mixture of both old and new songs, the setlist was a perfect blend of their work.

Their newest album Apoptosis, which came out in 2021, features genre-bending, groovy songs that are unlike their previous albums. With each album, it’s almost like Inner Wave enters a new era, different from the one before, but still drawing from the signature sound they have.

After playing some new material, the band then played a handful of songs from previous albums. Throughout the show, the audience was extremely engaged with the band, and the band was engaging with the crowd.

Towards the end of their set, Inner Wave began to thank fans for coming to the show and explained the struggles for musicians during the current COVID-19 pandemic. As we all have seen in the past 2 years, the pandemic has had an impact on all people, but especially artists. Musicians rely on live events and fan engagement for both inspiration and money. Without these things, artists have had to find new ways to stay connected with fans, as well as find ways to release music, despite the pandemic.

We have all been in this world-altering pandemic together, which makes it so much more exciting to be able to go back to things we love like live music.

After the show, “One more song” chants filled the venue, as fans waited anticipatingly to see if they would come back out. They did.

Inner Wave gave an encore with their two fan-favorite songs, “American Spirits” and “142“. As fans jumped and moshed to the songs, there was a sense of community between the band and the fans. I can truly say that this concert was a great one, and you can tell Inner Wave cares about their fanbase, and the fans care about each other.
