Former Disney Channel star Demi Lovato’s “It’s Not That Deep” tour hit Climate Pledge in Seattle on Wednesday night, May 14. Their opener of the night was Adéla, a Slovak singer who was about to become a final member of Katseye, and despite not reaching that goal, her career as a solo artist has been rising and brighter than ever. After all, opening for Demi Lovato is already a big step up. Adela confessed this was also a dream come true during the concert, especially since she used to watch Disney Channel growing up just like many other Demi fans.
Demi opened with “Fast,” a song that comes from her recent album that she released this year. While many fans, including me, were hyped, I wasn’t familiar with her newer releases, yet it did not stop me from watching and dancing to the songs despite not knowing them. However, a meaningful moment for me through the night was when she played “Heart Attack,” a song I grew up listening to while watching anime AMVs. Yet it seemed like I was not the only fan who grew up with this song, as everyone roared from their seats and was incredibly hyped, singing their hearts out.
As they continued singing other classics such as “Confident,” “Neon Lights,” and “Give Your Heart a Break,” she also sang some of her recent songs while confessing this is her first tour while being married and stating most of the love songs in her new album were about her husband.
She not only gave us a show of her personal life but also gave us the names of her backup dancers and gave them their time to shine with amazing solos.
As the show kept going, she showed different eras, including “Camp Rock” and her new album. While many, including me, wanted her to sing something from Camp Rock, a fan broke the tie between her first and second album and pulled out the second album in a lottery. I was disappointed, including some of the girls next to me, but as soon as she played “La La Land,” I was absolutely stunned, especially since that song played a big role in my gender identity as a child when I decided I felt more comfortable dressing more masculine, and now with the fact that she also identifies as non-binary, this feels like such big representation to many others.
As we got closer to the end, she continued playing classics as well as more recent songs, including “Sorry Not Sorry,” which ended with the quote of her album and tour name: “It’s Not That Deep.”
Two songs that stuck with me the most from this whole night besides “Heart Attack” were “I Really Don’t Care” and her ending song “Cool for the Summer.” I have been through a lot lately in my personal life, especially within my love life, but singing “I Really Don’t Care” with other fans who were probably going through the same experiences as me, since some were crying, healed something in me.
“Cool for the Summer” was an amazing song to end the night, which hyped all the fans around me, including myself, making the night feel filled with magic and love.
Overall, experiencing Demi Lovato’s music live was a dream come true, and I know for a fact that little 8-year-old me would be excited to see the person I have become and the fact that I got to see her former favorite singer. And remember, it really is not that deep.
