From Seattle To Brooklyn And Back: A Preview of Iska Dhaaf at The Vera Project

iskadhaaf-2

Two guys living in Brooklyn are planning on gracing our little blue studio this Friday night with some sweet tunes about desire. Nathan Quiroga and Benjamin Verdoes are these very individuals, as the two members of the band Iska Dhaaf, meaning “let it go” in Somali. This Friday is the last stop of their huge tour that began this past September in their original home of Seattle, at Bumbershoot. Since then, they have been touring all over the country promoting their new album, The Wanting Creature, a fascinatingly rich new set of music that thoughtfully translates personal experiences of their own lives into nine artistically-crafted songs of quiet passion and electronic emotion.

While you can catch them in the KXSU Lounge for an exclusive in-studio performance at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 4, you can also head over to The Vera Project later that night (doors at 8:00 p.m.) to support the duo at their very last show of their tour. KXSU will also be giving away one pair of tickets to the show!

The schedule for the night at The Vera Project looks like an exciting mix. First up is Tiburones, hailing from Portland, with a crazy interesting sound. They are the combined project of Y La Bamba’s Luz Elena Mendoza and The Shaky Hands’ Nick Delffs. Citing influences of Neil Young, Patti Smith, and the Velvet Underground, Tiburones should be an upbeat, intriguing mix of strong female vocals with big, celebratory rhythms. Next is Seattle band Special Explosion, a noisy punk band with edge. This five-person group features Ben Gibbard-like vocals with the addition of a strong female voice and Built to Spill-like guitar riffs, all with a distinctively Pacific Northwest spin. And, of course, Iska Dhaaf will be closing off the night as the third and final act.

Join me and go to both shows! Spend a full night having some musical fun! Iska Dhaaf! Let it go!

Iska Dhaaf at KXSU In-Studio: Friday, November 4, 2016 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. It is free and all SU students are welcome.
