I’m a bona fide super fan of local musicians. I’m also a fan of artists who use their platform as a way to raise awareness and money for non-profit organizations doing good in the community. Brandi Carlile, along with Tim and Phil Hanseroth (the twins), are perfect examples of artists who do just that.
The trio is bringing their annual fundraiser, “Raise the Roof,” to Town Hall Seattle on Sunday, December 4th. The show is an extension of their Pin Drop Tour, a series of concerts with “no amplification, no microphones, [and] no PA system,” All proceeds from Sunday night’s concert will benefit the Looking Out Foundation and War Child UK.
“Looking Out amplifies the impact of music by empowering those without a voice. From neighborhood to nation, we help fund causes and organizations that often go unnoticed. Founded in 2008 by Grammy-nominated artists Brandi Carlile, Tim and Phil Hanseroth, we band together with fans, nonprofits, and corporations to translate voices of song to voices of action. We are nimble to the ever-changing needs of the human race, and adapt to support the diverse demographic we serve. Every campaign we launch is backed by our passionate donors and fans, and $1 from every concert ticket sold goes directly toward our efforts. Together, we’re making music mean more.”
The foundation is currently featuring three campaigns:
The Story campaign: In honor of the 10th anniversary of Brandi Carlile’s album, The Story, and in partnership with War Child, The Story Campaign shares the stories of children whose families, communities, and schools have been torn apart by war. All money raised through this campaign will benefit War Child.
Fight the Fear campaign (FTFC): FTFC is a Seattle-based community-oriented violence prevention initiative. In partnership with The Wave Foundation, this campaign aims to provide training in “relationship violence education, sexual-assault awareness, and self defense skills including intuition honing, de-escalation, boundary setting, assertive communication and fighting techniques.”
The If Project: The If Project is a collaboration of law enforcement, currently and previously incarcerated adults and community members focused on intervention, prevention, and reduction in incarceration and recidivism. The project provides programs for youth, adults who work with youth, incarcerated women approaching reentry and workshops and trainings for men and women who are currently incarcerated.
Unfortunately, for those who are interested in attending, the show sold out very quickly, but don’t let that push you away from keeping an eye out for upcoming shows and music. There are two things I know about Brandi Carlile concerts: 1) If you’re not already, you will leave the show a super fan, and 2) almost everyone else in attendance has seen her before and knows every word to every song, recorded or not. It’s an experience that stays with you for weeks, maybe even months (if you’re me).
