Seattle is the second-to-last stop on Haley Bonar’s fall Impossible Dream 2016 tour, and she’s bringing along fellow Minnesotan band Night Moves to Barboza on December 8th.
Haley Bonar has been releasing music under her own name for 10 years (in addition to being the front woman of Twin Cities band Gramma’s Boyfriend). Bonar’s new album, Impossible Dream, is diverse in theme and genre, alternating between vulnerable and somewhat melancholy songs, like “Hometown,” “I Can Change,” and “Better Than Me,” to more up-beat and grittier rock tunes, like “Kismet Kill,” “Called You Queen,” and “Blue Diamonds Fall.” At times, this album reminds me of singers like Aimee Mann, Jenny Lewis (mostly during her Rilo Kiley era), and Springtime Carnivore.
Psych-pop group Night Moves released their sophomore album Pennied Days on Domino Records last spring and has since garnered over 1.5 million plays across various platforms.
I’ve been trying to figure out how to describe this dynamic duo, comprised of John Pelant and Micky Alfano, for a few weeks now. While doing some research, I came across an article in The Guardian which described Night Moves’ vibe as “Neil Young-in-space,” and I’ve decided I can’t come up with anything more accurate. They’ve got this laid back style similar to The Flaming Lips, combined with a slightly synthesized Mac DeMarco (from Another One album) country-esque feel, which I find very intriguing.
