Danish singer-songwriter Agnes Obel is headed to the Tractor Tavern this Sunday, March 26th in support of her 2016 release, Citizen of Glass. The album, Obel says, “conceptually and thematically revolves around the transparence symbolized by the ubiquitous substance. Glass is a material which is both strong, fragile and transparent all at once. It’s very relevant for our time and it’s very relevant for me. But generally speaking, it’s a theme relevant for everyone, not just those making music or art. One constantly uses oneself and one’s surroundings as material. One makes oneself transparent.”

Obel made waves in 2010 with the release of her first album, Philharmonics, winning her five Danish Music Awards. Obel’s classical approach to music and composition are very much present in Citizen of Glass, but the modern aspects woven throughout the tracks are what make this album truly exciting and infectious. A cyborg, male version of herself makes an appearance on “Familiar,” over 250 tracks of strings layered upon each other to create a sound that fills the room, and a variety of obscure instruments (like an early synthesizer from the 1920s called a Trautonium) contribute to the overall gothic, ethereal, and hypnotic atmosphere of Citizen of Glass.

Opening for Agnes Obel is singer-songwriter Ethan Gruska. Gruska just released his debut solo album, Slowmotionary, on March 3rd, 2017 on Sire Records, which draws from the influences of Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. This album is a slight departure from his work with sister Barbara Gruska as a part of the highly-acclaimed pop duo’s group, “The Belle Brigade,” but is just as enjoyable and lyrically touching.

This event is sold out! If you managed to snag a ticket, doors at at 7:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m.
