Formed through BOYSPLANET: an Mnet survival show featuring 98 contestants, HANBIN, JIWOONG, ZHANG HAO, MATTHEW, TAERAE, RICKY, GYUVIN, GUNWOOK, and YUJIN fought their way to secure spots as the 9 members set to debut in a new boy group. ZEROBASEONE (ZB1) debuted on July 10th, 2023, with their extended EP “Youth in the Shade.” Since then, ZB1 has garnered immense popularity for the group’s diversity, various age groups, and their lineup of visuals. The members’ ages range from 25-17 (1998 to 2007), with a blend of Chinese and Korean members, including one member who grew up in Canada. Fans are amazed not only by the members’ visuals but also by their pre-debut videos, which showcase their talent, humor, and charm. It’s no wonder they’ve developed such a devoted fanbase.

On May 13th, 2024, ZB1 released a mini EP titled “You Had Me at Hello,” featuring tracks such as “Solar POWER,” “Feel the POP,” “Dear ECLIPSE,” “SWEAT,” “Sunday RIDE,” and “HELLO”. This EP offers the perfect soundtrack for the impending hot summer days. Listening to this EP, I felt the need to grab a swimsuit and head to Alki Beach for some beach volleyball. The lead track, “SWEAT,” set to be featured in the Garfield movie, comes with a music video (credited down below) that perfectly aligns with ZB1’s style. This song embodies the essence of summer, evoking smiles with its infectious rhythm and witty lyrics. However, don’t let me drive while this song is playing, the addictive choreography might lead to a car crash. MATTHEW, my bias (favorite member), and Ricky shine in the music video with their vocals and infectious smiles, making it impossible not to dance along.

“Feel the POP” also comes with a captivating music video (credited down below), which, although unconventional, complements the group’s concept. From cowboys to office workers to just regular guys, the video portrays a world torn apart by pink, quirky figures, while ZB1 remains composed, riding horses and lounging around. In this video, GYUVIN stands out, emphasizing his dance skills with expressive facial expressions and a unique style that’s unmissable. Though not as likely to cause a car crash, the song is still really good and it showcases the talents of each member in rap, vocal, and dance.

One of the standout tracks on the album is the closing song, “HELLO”, this song feels a lot like a K-Drama slow-motion scene where the main characters fall into each other’s arms at a bus stop. It’s a charming, refreshing tune that tugs at the heartstrings of many fans. ZHANG HAO’s unique vocals add depth to the track, leaving listeners wanting more. “Solar POWER” also captures attention with its sultry, soft-rock vibe, showcasing the members’ versatility. The rap line (JIWOONG, GYUVIN, and GUNWOOK) delivers a solid performance that offers a refreshing change from ZB1’s typical vocal-centric songs.

This EP is a must-listen that is perfect for summer road trips, strolls in the park, picnics with friends or significant others, and warm afternoons that turn into cool evenings. ZEROBASEONE continues to ascend as a new, talented, and popular group. While their music does lean more toward the glitter gel pen side of K-Pop, their latest EP “You Had Me at Hello” offers listeners a diverse range of sounds and styles. You can stream their music on Spotify, YouTube Music, and Apple Music, or purchase the physical album from retailers like Target, Walmart, Amazon, or your local K-Pop store. Stan ZB1 for clear skin.
