Self-titled after Nina Simone’s iconic classic To Be Young, Gifted and Black, 2BYG is an emerging R&B boy band bringing a fresh perspective to a classic sound. Based in Fort Worth and signed under Def Jam Recordings, the group is part of a new wave that’s redefining the concept of a boy band with intention.

2BYG recently caught attention on the original Netflix series Star Search with a standout cover of NSYNC’s “It’s Gonna Be Me.” This performance reflected a message they shared in a press conference with 1824: to honor the past while creating something new. As one member of 2BYG, KD, explained, the group focuses on adding a modern sound while tapping into nostalgia without relying on it. That balance between the two is what makes 2BYG stand out.

Three of the members come from gospel backgrounds, which is very much heard in their music. It shapes their harmonies and overall sound in specific songs. With tracks like Be Mine, their gospel influence is clearly demonstrated, blending smooth R&B with soul choir harmonies and depth that still feels classic yet modern. Their approach is rooted in what they call being fundamental and foundational.

2BYG has earned strong reactions from covers and trending videos on TikTok. On their EP The Yearbook, they reinterpret “What You Won’t Do for Love” by Bobby Caldwell, shifting the title to Do 4 Luv. The track honors the classic soul feel of Caldwell’s original but adds synths and stacked harmonies that elevate the song to another level. It takes a slower tempo, making you really listen to the words and how the group honors the originality of the song. Additionally, the vocal runs in these songs are absolutely insane, leaving listeners in awe at how effortless the harmonies sound. The group shares that they have more in store when it comes to reinterpretations, with plans to cover tracks by Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Isley Brothers, and many others.

Before this group, before the music, there was friendship. Three of the members have known each other since high school, building harmonies in between classes. That connection still shapes how they create today. They often begin their process with production, allowing vocals and lyrics to grow in time with the sound. The group clarified that their approach varies based on each member.

Now a four-member group, the addition of KD expanded their range. Even from listening to their tracks, you can hear the fullness of the harmonies, and the creative direction is very versatile. As the members shared, KD brought a new perspective and set of backgrounds that the group didn’t have before.

In the end, their goal remains the same: to bring real love back to R&B and to stay consistent and authentic in the genre. There is pressure that comes with being an R&B boy band today. Expectations are already high, and comparisons are almost constant. They’re expected to be great even at this early stage in their career. Still, 2BYG sees authenticity as the key to longevity. Staying true to themselves is what will carry them forward.

With their most recent single Be Mine, 2BYG made it clear: the future of R&B boy bands is here, and it’s worth watching. Stream Be Mine to hear their fresh sound for yourself, then keep an ear out. This group isn’t just honoring the past; they’re shaping what comes next.

They’re not just bringing boy bands back; they’re pushing the concept forward.
