Habits of My Heart EP Review

Do you know those times when you hear just one song from an artist and instantly become hooked? Ladies and gentleman, this is one of those moments. Using a medley of R&B, electronic and alternative rock influences, Habits of my Heart has you hooked after one song. All I can say is that this EP is so freaking good.

Singer-songwriter Jaymes Young has a very interesting sound. Aside from his completely mesmerizing voice, his music seems to be a a mix of R&B, electronic, rock, and a bit something else and then some. I would compare his sound to those of The Weeknd mixed with a little bit of Mikky Ekko. I think it would be very hard to label him in one specific genre—and that’s my favorite part about his music.

The first song on this EP, “Habits of My Heart,” is a rework of Sufjan Stevens’ “Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois.” Although there are certain parallels between the two songs, Young’s take is a more of an R&B version, contrasting with Steven’s folky sound. The song slowly begins with a simple melody and muffled singing, creating a very smooth sound. Then the beat suddenly drops and you find yourself suddenly captivated by the simple R&B rhythm and Young’s voice. Good stuff.

“I’ll Be Good” is a self-proclamation of one’s reckless history and the longing to change. For a lack of better words, it’s about him wanting to “be good.” He sings,

“For all of the light that I shut out

For all of the innocent things that I’ve doubt

For all of the bruises that I’ve caused and the tears

For all of the things that I’ve done all these years.”

I admit it. This song is very catchy and it’s also very relatable. After listening to it once, I can understand why it’s his most popular song.

“Moondust” is the last song on this EP and it’s a simple, stripped song with beautiful lyrics of love. This is one of those songs that I listen to with my eyes closed, fully immersing myself in the music. This is my personal favorite and I’ve definitely played it at least five times a day so far (guilty as charged). I’ve also listened to the regular version of this song and I prefer this version hands down. The reason why this song is so good is because its so simple—just some chords and Young’s raspy voice. Its incredibly sad and haunting, but so, so good.

After listening to this EP, I know for a fact that I will continue to follow Jaymes Young’s music. If you are like me and love soulful voices with simple but great melodies that will hook you, this is a great EP that you might want to give a listen.
