Be part of the global street paper movement!

In June, street paper journalists, entrepreneurs and activists from around the world will descend upon Seattle for the Global Street Paper Summit. The summit is run by INSP – a nonprofit that supports 115 street newspapers all over the world, including Seattle’s Real Change. Street papers are independent media that reach a unique worldwide audience of 6 million readers per edition, while helping 14,000 homeless and unemployed vendors to get back on their feet.

This is your chance to be part of this powerful movement for social change. Come along, hang out with street paper innovators and party to some great tunes by hot Seattle bands.

All profits will go to support street papers.

Jason Dodson (of The Maldives)

In the great Northwest, The Maldives are more than a band, they are an institution. With a history that goes back more than a decade (their friendships considerably longer), they’ve played every kind of gig imaginable – from backwoods festival on the back of a flatbed truck to the inauguration of Seattle’s musically minded mayor. They have overflowed the stages at SXSW, CMJ, Capitol Hill Block Party, Sasquatch, and Bumbershoot. They were featured on MTV’s $5 Cover series which spotlighted the best of Seattle’s music scene. The band’s frontman Jason Dodson brings us some of their soulful country-rock.

Naomi Wachira

Naomi Wachira makes music plucked from her life, imbued with a sense of hope. She credits her influence to two groundbreaking female songwriters, Miriam Makeba and Tracy Chapman. The daughter of a pastor, Naomi joined the traveling family band at five years old, spreading the good word through gospel song in Kenya. Since then, with her Afro infused rhythms and simple lyrics, she has sought to make a positive mark in the world, by reminding us that not matter our differences, we are all alike in our existence.

Valley Maker

Birthed out of a senior thesis project on the narratives of Genesis, Valley Maker has grabbed the attention of audiences across the US with musically spare folk that dares to take on the really big philosophical and religious questions. The lineup includes frontman Austin Crane on guitars, banjo, piano and vocals; Amy Godwin on vocals; Nathan Poole, electric guitar and percussion; Caleb Weathersby, percussion; James Gibson, upright and electric bass; and Kenny McWilliams, piano and percussion.
“A Southern Gothic hymnal for the secular and devout alike.” – Consequences of Sound.

The Dip

The Dip is an electrifying soul group from Seattle, Washington. The band (containing three members of Beat Connection) is comprised of seven musicians and originated at the University of Washington. Fuelled by their self-released EP in 2013, The Dip has played a string of packed shows in Seattle, including an evening slot at the Northwest Folklife Festival, a capacity show at the popular Capitol Hill Block Party, an opening slot for the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band at Neumos, and numerous headlining shows of their own at various venues in Seattle and Bellingham. The Dip recently finished recording their first LP at Avast Studios, which is available now!

COHO
https://coho.bandcamp.com/
COHO is a Seattle band intent on having as much fun as humanly possible. Dance-y beats and impressive harmonies combine with colliding and spinning currents of sound to form a passionately emphatic experience that will not disappoint. The six multi-instrumentalists bring together varied musical backgrounds and taste, resulting in a refreshing, innovative take in a crowded genre. Mixing folk roots, ska histories, and experimental wanderings with classical training and real life produce a sound that can only be COHO. They’re 6 best friends playing shows around the Pacific North West, they’re on the road, they’re in the studio, and they’re generally horsing around.
