Welcome to the Jungle: A Review of Beat Connection and Jungle at The Neptune on May 20th

I’m going to be honest, folks, it’s been a while since I’ve has this much fun at a show. On Wednesday, May 20th, Jungle, along with Beat Connection, put on an impressive show at the beautiful Neptune Theatre.

As the opener, Reed Juenger, the producer and one of the founding members of Seattle-based Beat Connection, put on a slick 40-minute DJ set, fully equipped with synchronized lights (on his part) and heavy head bobbing (on my part). After recently seeing Beat Connection at this year’s Quadstock (I also interviewed them prior to Quadstock, which you check out here), I must admit that I cannot get enough of their sound. This time, Reed took the stage on his own and put on an impressive set playing remixes of songs by TLC, Paul Simon, Rae Sremmurd, and even a song by the very own Beat Connection. He knows what he’s doing and he does it well. If you ever have the chance to see Beat Connection, either as a full band or as a solo DJ show, please do yourself a favor and go—trust me, you won’t regret it.

After much anticipation, Jungle took the stage. Formed in 2013, Jungle, a 7 piece band from England, graced Seattle with their presence as a part of their 2015 North American Tour. They performed the songs from their first self-titled album, which has an emphasis on funk, heavy soul, and a modern rendition of disco that is still slightly reminiscent of the 70’s. Their set started off with synth and heavy strobe lights, creating an air of anticipation and excitement. Once their music started, they exuded an incredible stage presence with 7 individuals doing their own thing, yet creating a collaborative effort right in front of our eyes. Their set was mesmerizing, with the heavy light show and strobe light effects, Andro’s smooth dance moves, Tom’s all-camo attire, and the gorgeous Rudi killin’ the game with her fierce vocals. They played some of their most popular songs, including Lucky I Got What I Want, Time, and, of course, Busy Earnin’.

Overall, I have to admit that this was one of the better concerts I have been to. My body still hurts from all of the dancing. My throat is still a little sore from yelling and singing along. But, hey, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
