From glam rock to modern EDM, from punk rock to beautiful dream-pop, from soul to grunge, the first day of Capitol Hill Block Party’s 20th anniversary is too eclectic. No matter what type of music you love, you will be able to find a place, and our KXSU staff is beyond excited to be there this weekend.
The Dip @ Main Stage, 4:00-4:45 p.m. VS. Pale Noise @ Barboza Stage, 4:30-5:00 p.m.
Honestly, I’m struggling to decide which opening performance I should see. While the seven-piece soul music masters The Dip are opening the entire festival at the Main Stage at 4pm, another wonderful glam rock band, Pale Noise, is getting ready for their very first CHBP set just a half hour later. It’s so incredible how The Dip can combine seven different instruments in such a harmonious way and create such upbeat, groovy, and fun rhythms. On the other hand, Pale Noise manages to present an impressive, brief history of classic rock n’ roll. It’s never easy to deal with festival performance overlap.
MØ @ Main Stage, 7:45 p.m.
Raised in Denmark, one of several Nordic countries that’ve brought many well-known EDM and metal artists, MØ, aka Karen Marie Ørsted, earned great success from her first album No Mythologies to Follow. The album offers a unique harmony of chamber pop, soul, electronic, and R&B sounds. Last summer, she teamed up with Diplo, for their hit single, “Kamikaze,” and was the premier vocalist on the huge Major Lazer and DJ Snake smash hit, “Lean On.” Additionally, she’ll be one of the two major features on Major Lazer’s next single, “Cold Water.” The other major feature on the song? Justin Bieber. Heard of him before?

Dilly Dally @ Vera Stage, 8:15 p.m.
Soft grunge group Dilly Dally reestablishes Seattle’s natural musical heritage. As guitarist and vocalist Katie Monks sings in “Next Gold,”
“I’ll stay chasing dreams on the road”
…it’s easy as a fan to reflect on how she’s always kept her promise with that line, ever since she started the band with Liz Ball six years ago. Their efforts paid off when their debut album, Sore, was released to very positive reviews and reaction. The drastic contrast between the fuzzy bass line and sweet treble guitar, as well as Monks’ punchy vocals, will leave any listener with a great impression of their artistic character.
DONZIS @ Cha Cha Stage, 8:45 p.m.
“Get Down and Dance” with Donzis at Cha Cha! Inspired by AC/DC in the Bon Scott years, Tres Hombre’s era of ZZ Top, and Motörhead during Overkill, Donzis’s music has all the essences of ’70s and ’80s hard rock. It’s heavy, but the bluesy rhythms make the music bouncy enough to let you dance.
