A Bright Night at The Neptune (Reviewing Echosmith)

The Neptune Theatre came alive with colors and happiness on Saturday night as Echosmith came to town. The Neptune is one of my favorite venues because its occupants respect personal space, unlike some other concerts I’ve been to. While the space was filled with excited audience members, I was happy to not feel too claustrophobic. The Neptune is a beautiful, multilevel theater with vaulted ceilings and stained-glass panels along the walls. If you’re looking for a good venue for your next concert, I would highly suggest The Neptune.

Opening for Echosmith was The Score, an American pop/rock band based in Los Angeles. Aside from their musical talent, the duo was not hard on the eyes. They played with energy and enthusiasm and hooked the crowd from their first song, encouraging us to sing along and put our hands in the air—a good warm up for the big show that was coming up!

Echosmith had two backup musicians, on keyboard and guitar, who started playing music, slowly, before the trio came out on stage. This built anticipation, and you could feel the audience buzzing with excitement. Graham came out first, and sat down at his drums, followed by Noah on guitar, and finally when Sydney came out, the music exploded, and confetti shot into the air. This was such a fun beginning to the concert!

What impressed me most is the fact that all three members of Echosmith are under 22-years-old. I love knowing that they make music because it brings them joy and happiness. I loved seeing them dance and smile and share their joy with Seattle; this is one of the reasons I love live music. Sydney sang which such effortless beauty and ease—she is honestly better live than any recording I have heard of her. Graham played drums with a delicate ferocity that really created a backbone to every piece (in my opinion, drummers don’t get enough credit, they’re awesome). Noah danced in circles as he played his bass guitar with ease, but also with a childlike enthusiasm that made is hard not to smile while watching him. I was struck by their beauty and talent.

They played my two favorite songs “Bright” and (as the encore) “Cool Kids”. They also played some songs off their new album “Talking Dreams”. At one point, Sydney invited an audience member up on stage to sing and dance with her, which I thought was very fun and kind. About half way through the performance, Sydney left the stage for an outfit change, and Noah took to the mic to thank the crowd for their never-ending support and excitement. He said that seeing all of our smiling faces only makes what they do more enjoyable. I love hearing artists appreciate their fans, so this was a great addition to the show in my opinion.

Echosmith is a band I have known of, and been a fan of, for years. I have been to many concerts, but I can easily say this was one of the best I have been to (probably top 3, honestly). It was such a bright and colorful night, filled with smiles, dancing, and good energy. I was lucky to share this experience with my friend Karina who is responsible for many of my smiles throughout the night. Thank you, Echosmith, for your infectious energy and your dedication to beautiful music.
